About Massage Therapy
Did you know that experts estimate that upwards of 90%
of all disease is stress related?
The good news is that we can help!
Massage
and its related forms of bodywork are among the earliest healing
modalities known to man, with written records of its benefits dating
back as far as 2000 BC. The ancient Greeks and Romans used massage
combined with aromatherapy and hot and cold hydrotherapy treatments to maintain health and promote healing.
Massage
therapy is a simple, effective and relatively inexpensive treatment
method that can bring both instant and long lasting improvement
to your health. It works by kneading and manipulating muscles to
relax them, and uses friction to stimulate soft
tissues. This therapy increases blood and lymph circulation while
breaking up scar tissue.
Massage
is useful in many conditions in which body relaxation, the reduction
of swelling and increased muscle mobilization
(range of motion) is desired, and can also be helpful in decreasing
swelling and fluids at the site of recent injury or trauma. Fibromyalgia,
arthritis, tension headache, tendonitis, ligament sprains and muscle
strains are just a few of the specific conditions that respond well
to massage therapy.

Aromatherapy
Practitioner: Leslie Jalkotzy R.M.T.
Aromatherapy enlists the powerful olfactory system to trigger pain
relief, relaxation and stimulate the immune system and uses pure
essential oils to seek to influence, change or modify mind, body
physiology or mood.
Essential
oils are highly volatile substances derived from flowers, leaves,
roots, grasses, wood, fruit, nuts & berries, bark and gums such
as frankincense. When these oils are breathed in, the molecules
rise to the top of the nose, meet the olfactory mucous membrane,
passed on through the olfactory bulb where it is ‘amplified’
and through the olfactory nerve directly into the limbic system
of the brain.
Specific chemical compounds in the essential oils may also be absorbed
directly through the skin as in the case of drugs and cosmetic substances.
Our therapists may, upon request, add aromatherapy to accentuate
the therapeutic effect of any massage treatment or design an aromatherapy
massage experience just for you.
Detox Massage
Practitioners: Leslie Jalkotzy R.M.T., Shannon Bestwick R.M.T.
Detoxification
is now recognized as a primary tool in the prevention of disease
and premature aging.
This treatment utilizes extraordinarily gentle and soothing stroking
motions and lymphatic drainage techniques to reduce
edema and flush out toxins that overload our bodies everyday.
The detox massage focuses its attention on the lymphatic system
of the body, that primarily runs superior
(closer to the surface) to the circulatory system and is responsible
for carrying cellular wastes and toxins to the kidney and liver
to be eliminated from the body.
In a world that surrounds us with toxins and pollution in the air
we breath, the clothes we wear, and the food we eat –
consider this treatment the most valuable spring and fall cleaning
that you can do for yourself!
Hot Stone Therapy
Practitioners: Leslie Jalkotzy R.M.T., Shannon Bestwick R.M.T.
Hot
stone therapy dates by more than 5000 years and can be found in
many different races and cultures. In Ayurvedic medicine the use
of warmed river stones along with essences of flowers and herbs
to heal and soothe is well documented.
In the Aboriginal American culture hot stones were warmed by the
sun (heliotherapy) and placed on the body to soothe and heal, or
used in the sweat lodge as a powerful spiritual ritual to cleanse
the body of illness and disease.
Basalt stones are formed as lava cools following a volcanic eruption.
They have an exceptionally smooth texture, hold heat well and are
naturally rounded. The stones that Leslie uses originate in the
Andes Mountains of Peru and are hand picked from the shores of the
Pacific Ocean where they have been rounded by erosion. Naturally
collected stones maintain their inherent magnetic field which helps
the rebalance the body’s energy centers during treatment.
Stones used for cold therapy are often white basalt, moonstone,
marble or jade.
Benefits of Hot Stone Therapy:
- improves back/shoulder/neck pain
- increases circulation and improves lymphatic circulation
- decreases joint and menstrual pain, tension headaches
and sciatic pain
- promotes well being and vitality
- promotes grounding due to high magnetic fields inherent
in the stones
- reduces stress
|
Benefits of Cold Stone Therapy:
- reduces any local swelling, inflammation, redness
- used to deep cool acute injuries
- tension headaches
- sinus congestion
- tones and stimulates the body

Hot/Cold
Stone Therapy is a gentle form of massage that uses the heat and
magnetic properties of the stones, to provide therapeutic results
usually associated with deeper tissue manipulation. This therapy
is ideal for those who enjoy deep heat, and are looking for a truly
relaxing body treatment.
Deep Tissue/Sports Massage
Practitioners: Leslie Jalkotzy R.M.T., Shannon Bestwick R.M.T., Kari Cameron R.M.T.
There
are many commonalities between Deep Tissue and Sports Massage, in
that they are highly results oriented and generally preferred by
athletes and those who take their fitness and health seriously.
Therapeutic/Sports Massage
Sports Massage is a special form of massage and is typically used
before, during, and after athletic events. The purpose of the massage
is to prepare the athlete for peak performance, to drain away fatigue,
to relieve swelling, to reduce muscle tension,
to promote flexibility and to prevent injuries.
The main purpose of sports massage therapy is to help alleviate
the stress and tension which builds up in the body’s soft
tissues during physical activity. Where minor injuries and lesions
occur, due to overexertion and/or overuse, massage can break them
down quickly and effectively. The massage will help prepare the
athlete for peak performance, to drain away fatigue, to relieve
swelling, to reduce muscle tension, to promote flexibility and to
prevent injuries. Sports massage can help prevent those niggling
injuries that so often get in the way of performance and achievement,
whether a person is an athlete or a once a week jogger.
Depending on the needs of the athlete, a variety of techniques
are used. The technique often involves a blend of traditional Swedish
massage techniques as well as some Acupressure and Shiatsu techniques
specifically designed to treat professional athletes. Each type
of sport has different demands on the players. Each sport uses muscle
groups in a different way. Sports massage is designed to address
those specific concerns and may
differ according to the sport the athlete plays. Sports massage
can be aimed to help heal strained muscles and allow healthy ones
to reach peak performance and maintain it while minimizing the risk
of injury.
Deep Tissue Massage
Practitioners: Leslie Jalkotzy R.M.T., Shannon Bestwick R.M.T., Kari Cameron R.M.T.
Deep
Tissue Massage is a massage technique that focuses on the deeper
layers of muscle tissue. It aims to release the chronic patterns
of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger or elbow
pressure on the contracted areas, either following or going across
the fiber's of the muscles, tendons and fascia.
Deep tissue massage is used to release chronic muscle tension through
slower strokes and more direct deep pressure or friction applied
across the grain of the muscles not with the grain. Deep tissue
massage helps to break up and eliminate scar tissue. Deep tissue
massage usually focuses on more specific areas and may cause some
soreness during or right after the massage. However, if the massage
is done correctly you should feel better than ever within a day
or two.
Deep Tissue massage feels good and it is beneficial to your health.
When muscles are stressed or inflamed, they block oxygen and nutrients,
leading to inflammation that builds up toxins in the muscle tissue.
A deep-tissue massage helps loosen muscle tissues, release toxins
from muscles and get blood and oxygen circulating properly. Because
many toxins are released, it's important to drink plenty of water
after a deep-tissue session to help eliminate these toxins from
the body.
The purpose of deep tissue work is to "unstick" the fibers
of a muscle while releasing deeply-held patterns of tension, removing
toxins, while relaxing
and soothing the muscle. It is both corrective and therapeutic.
